Soul Buggin' bugs out at Sounddhism

So last week we finally revealed our new home where we'll be continuing our monthly disco-inspired nonsense and rest assured our plans are coming together nicely for our first party on bank holiday easter Sunday 8th April. Before we unveil our line up and further details on that party it's worth a mention of another little session we've been asked to play at the same venue on Saturday March 3rd called Sounddhism. We played there last year with Simbad and Natalie Duncan and had a laugh so they've invited us back and put us in charge of their late night dancefloor joystick (oo-er) alongside Brownswood Records rising star Pedestrian, Harleighblu, Hannah Heartshape and Georgie Rose. Tickets are a fiver for that session and we're treating it as a nice little unofficial warm up for our big relaunch the following month.

Soul Buggin' finds a new home...

So after weeks of speculation, drunken banter and plenty of poking and prodding from inquisitive disco fiends at 6am after parties we can finally reveal our new home in 2012 - The Bodega Social Club, 23 Pelham Street, Nottingham. Check their website out here for what goes on.

Since we learned of the very sad closure of Moog late last year we've been trawling Nottingham's basements, boozers and bars for a suitable alternative that not only could adequately host our little monthly disco but more importantly prove suitable for our antics, punters and visiting guest djs. To say this was a headache is an understatement but after much deliberation, head scratching and generally weighing up the price of fish we came to a decision that not only made perfect sense but would enable us to continue where we left off and provide just the right space for our party.

The Bodega Social has played host to a ridiculous amount of bands and djs over the years, far too many to list here and for a central city venue is about as eclectic as you'd hope to find musically. Already home to thriving alternative club nights like Sounddhism and Highness we're honoured and excited to be welcomed onto the roster. When we told Raul (the Soul Buggin' online master swordsman) he instantly striped off and tried to neck a whole carton of Sunny Delight. What a crazy fruit.

So I guess the next question is when is the next party? Well in true Soul Buggin' fashion our eyes always hover over a good old bank holiday so our first 'official' party will be on Bank Holiday Easter Sunday 8th April. Full line up yet to be confirmed so keep your eyes on the blog for updates over the next few weeks but we'd love you to all come down and break us in proper. After that we'll be going out on the last Saturday of the month, just like we did at Moog, so no need to mess about with your diaries, child care or more importantly your sunday morning carers/chemist/eastenders omnibus settings.

Happy New Year!

Well what a way to bow out at Moog eh? New Years Eve saw us somewhat tearfully put on our last party at the venue before it closes its doors in January and what a ruddy session it turned out to be. We thought the Bill Brewster night earlier in the year couldn't be topped for the most amount of sweaty bodies in Moog but New Years Eve was a whole different animal. Right from the get go people came down and got on the good foot and let loose with one of the best crowds we've ever had and we'd just like to say a big thank you to all those that decided to come and raise a glass to see in 2012.

It was always inevitable that the night was going to go on later than advertised and that 'one more record' (complete with drunken goodbye speech from myself) ended up snowballing into more wobbly discoid madness that would eventually see us finally turn the lights off gone 6am with the run out grooves of Nuyorican Soul's 'The Nervous Track' crackling away. Just seemed to make sense.

We're looking forward to returning in 2012 at a new venue here in Nottingham so keep your eyes on this blog for updates but until then, here's a selection of some pics from the night taken by various fruitcakes who were out getting sweaty on the dancefloor.

Soul Buggin' says goodbye to Moog...

With the imminent closure of Moog in a few weeks time I felt compelled to put down a memorandum, a few words, thoughts and feelings before we have our last Soul Buggin' party at the venue on New Years Eve as it gears up to close its doors in January. I guess I do it partly to shine a bit of a light on a place that needs putting on a pedestal for reasons I shall go into but also (and more importantly) so when future generations look back upon the blandness of Nottingham in years to come, no doubt viewed through a usb memory stick plugged into their central cortex, bored with the nonsense that a night out in the city centre on a Saturday night will no doubt involve, they may just ask the question "was Nottingham always this shite?"

The simple answer of course is no. We can all reminisce of the bygone days of classic clubs and weekenders till the cows come home that this city has been responsible for but that's not what this short tale is about. Lots of stories of good times have already been documented regarding the nightlife of Nottingham but few words have been put down on paper that particularly concern the madness of a certain little boozer in deepest Radford and the effect it had on many people who entered through those double doors.

I always found trying to explain Moog to people who had never been quite a comical endeavour, especially if the person in question was used to being dazzled by the more prominent glittering swanky bars of the city centre. In a nutshell I guess I best described it to new comers as a pub that was a bit bigger than your flat, had a bar in it, a few wonky taps, smelt very odd in places but more importantly felt safe, recognisable and a bit like a house party where even if you went on your own you'd leave with new friends, partners or as was the case on many occasions, a new carer. However to get straight to the point the best two words to describe this little adult youth club of unadulterated fun was quite simply 'rave pub'. While many late night sauce dens and boozers may attempt to label themselves as such due to their newly extended licenses they would be wholly and foolishly mistaken. The manager, the staff or djs do not decide if you are a rave pub. Your punters do and with Moog they most certainly did.

With it being situated on the outskirts of the city centre it tended to attract quite a few unique characters, the sort of people of all ages and from all walks of life that once upon a time you would of possibly met in the dark confines of back room way back when this city had a beating club pulse for more discerning sounds. You'd often have bugger all in common apart from the fact you both despised the rigmarole and rammell that a standard Saturday night in Nottingham involved. They'd of probably found their way to Moog much the same way you had on your first visit; namely being bundled into a taxi from town with friends, not having a clue where the journey was to lead but had been promised the pub was 'quite a laugh'. These very people who frequented Moog would never need much encouragement to let their hair down or chat nonsense until the sun came up despite hardly knowing you.

It was for these very reasons why we chose Moog for the home of our Soul Buggin' parties some 3 years ago. It just seemed to tick a lot of boxes, it had a dance floor for starters that could be as big or as small as you wanted, the staff and manager were sound as a pound and the punters would always come with an open mind and in most cases with an expectation of musically being served up something a bit different. When we decided to start inviting djs and producers from outside the city who had never been to Moog before we hoped they would understand the vibe, the crowd but more importantly why we chose to ask them to play to a room full of only 100 or so people when many of them were used to audiences several times that. Pretty much all of them got it instantly, often leaving buzzing with a smile from ear to ear (although a lot of that might of been the copious amounts of booze Moog had fed them as a warm welcome).

When I heard the news regarding its closure in January I was properly gutted, not just from the point of view as a promoter of a night that would have to find an alternative venue but more as a punter who over the years has had so many blinding nights under that roof. Unfortunately my brain cells have been subject to much mangling in that venue and I have been finding it hard to fully recall all of the episodes I've experienced but I think that's probably a good thing. Moog for myself and countless others was the very symbol of debauchery in Nottingham but luckily for us all walls haven't learned to talk just yet. Phew.

So Soul Buggin' will be packing up its bags and moving on in the new year and although we're looking forward to hosting our last party at the venue on 31st December I'll be surprised if there's not a tear or two come closing time. What time that will be will be anyone's guess as like everything in Moog, you never quite know what is going to happen but one thing will be certain, Nottingham will be a poorer place without it.

Thank you Moog for the memories, the silliness, the mentalism, the headaches, the stresses and the randomness but most importantly thank you for being different from everything else.

Big ups to all those that came down to see Mr Duckenfield last month at Soul Buggin'. After the usual party dramas it soon turned into a firing one in the end so we hope you enjoyed it as much as we did (that is apart from poor old Wrighty of course who was nursing a busted up foot but still managed to turn up, crutches in tow, until people started to use his broken digits as a dancefloor. Ouch!)

So is it December already? Ruddy nora that went quick. What happened to 2011 then? That's been one hell of a year. It's around this time that I like to take a good look back at the last 12 months, both musically and at some of the parties we've put on (if I've still got the brain cells left to remember them) and reflect a bit but sod that we ain't got time. We'll have to do that in a few weeks as we ain't done with you this year just yet cos we've got 3 more Buggin'-related sessions planned before we wave off the beast that was 2011. So, get some of these in yer diary and come and raise a glass with us in the party season.

We bomb down to the Broadway cinema on Friday 9th December for something a bit different. Wrighty and myself will be providing the sounds in the main bar area accompanied by some swish visuals from Nick Wright. We'll be rolling from 8pm till late.

Our last monthly knees up of the year down at Eleven in Hockley will be on Saturday 10th December so expect the usual 6 hours of Buggin' nonsense but with added mistle 'broken'toe and christmas edits galore. 9pm-3am.

And to bow out of 2011 with our hands in the air we've put together a line up of some of our favourite local djs and Soul Buggin' regulars for a bit of a big end of year knees up at Moog. Doors open from 9pm and we'll be going on till at least 4am. As an added bonus we don't believe in going silly with the door prices so it'll be the same entry as usual but we'll ALSO be chucking in a free buffet of nibbles and jazz snacks for those who come down early doors. Now hows about that then eh.

Oh 'eck me duck, incoming duck!

Chris Duckenfield last played in Nottingham a few years back now and as Soul Buggin' has slowly grown quietly into one of Nottinghams best kept secret late night discos we thought it was about time to invite the Swag man to the little rave pub we call Moog on Saturday 26th November.

With over two decades of djing safely tucked under his belt that have seen him take in the underground warehouse parties of the late eighties, classic clubs like The Sub Club in Glasgow and The Electric Chair in Manchester as well as thundering cathedrals of rave in the form of London’s Fabric, Chris Duckenfield has done it all. He was one half of the mighty Swag outfit, ran record labels Odori, Primitive and the more recent filthy disco imprint Popular Peoples Front and that’s not even mentioning the ‘ssssssh’ records he puts out. With his new single “I really do believe” smashing up any dancefloors that dare to drop it we can’t wait to unleash the mighty Duckenfield on the Soul Buggin’ floorboards.

Last Saturday the Kat Records crew came to town to lay it down and ruddy nora did they bring the party. Phat Phil Cooper and Ste Hodge hadn't been to Nottingham for a good few years so they were pumped up good and proper for this one - so much so Mr Cooper even brought his own mic to Moog to smash up the dance. Special edits, anthems, classics and party bombs were all thrown down and by the time "I am the black gold of the sun" dropped near the end I was nearly on my knees. Tops stuff from the boys. Massive thanks to all those that came down and of course to the boys who created a great party.

Right, it's about time we gave you some details of our next party on Saturday 29th October at the Moog bar here in Nottingham. For our next shindig we've decided to invite the guys behind the well respected KAT Record label - Phat Phil Cooper and Ste Hodge.

Over the years KAT Records has featured releases from superior cut and splice edit merchants such as leading players in the game Greg Wilson, Ashley Beedle, Rahaan, Al Kent, Danny Krivit and many more. With their releases supported by every man and his dog the duo themselves have played just about everywhere so we won’t bore you with a roll call of clubs although it’s a safe bet that you’ve probably been dancing on one of their blinding boat parties if you’ve been out to Croatia’s Garden Festival in recent years. Musically they love to chuck in everything from folk, psyched out funk rock, soul, jazz funk, disco, house and hip hop into their sets and their dancefloor ethos is exactly what Soul Buggin’ is all about - if its good, it gets played. High fives all round!

Soul Buggin' has been asked to come down and play at the Raise The Roof festival this Saturday (8th October) at the Nottingham Contemporary art gallery (next door to the Pitcher and Piano pub). We'll be playing 11pm-1am in the cafe bar and we're looking forward to joining a massive two day line up of artists, bands and djs that will be playing across the weekend. Looks like a great charity too.

Horse Meat Disco 7th Birthday Knees Up

At the end of September we saw that unruly little creature that is Soul Buggin' turn 7 and what a great birthday session we had. "Call the President!"

Well luckily we didn't have to last weekend as Soul Buggin' rolled back into Moog and showed Lo Pan how it goes down. So as the capitol put on extra nappies, worried that things were gonna kick off again at the Notting Hill Carnival, we had our own potential riot to worry about as we'd invited the Deep Space Orchestra, Andre Bonsor and Matt Rhythm to Soul Buggin' for our last bank holiday Sunday knees up. We had a great session with all DJs playing firing sets although unfortunately Matt Rhythm was unable to attend due to, erm, well we're not quite sure but we do know it involved a lot of booze and lack of sleep the night before. He sends his apologies that he couldn't make it and was properly gutted. What a silly sausage eh. Special thanks go to our guests that did play and all you lot who pilled down as well as Elmo and her 30th birthday fancy dress brigade that certainly livened up proceedings. For those who were too scared to approach me to ask about my fancy dress costume of choice I don't blame you although to be honest I think I looked less like Eddie Izzard and more like Vera Duckworth on crack.

So would you Adam and Eve it, It's only our birthday in September. Officially our seventh too if you have a count up and do the maths. Crikey. Have a search through this blog (Sept 2010) for the complete story of Soul Buggin' as last year I did a bit of a history lesson write up.

All you need to know now though is as it's a special occasion we thought what better way to celebrate than to invite back Horse Meat Disco's Filthy Luka to Soul Buggin' for a bloody big knees up. After the storming session we had with him last year we thought it only right.

The acclaimed Horse Meat Disco crew have put disco well and truly back on the map over the past few years. Whether it be their weekly Sunday night session at The Eagle in London, various powerhouse festival performances at Glastonbury, Bestival or Lovebox or even one of their parties in Lisbon or Berlin - the crew have garnered a unique reputation for amazing sessions and unmatchable sets.

We're very excited about this one, Raul (the Buggin' ambassador) is already frothing at the mouth and sorting out his hotpants and as usual when Horse Meat Disco come to town things get pretty crazy so we'd advise getting down nice and early to get your stomp on.

Doors open at 9pm and we roll till 3am. Entry £3 before 10.30pm, £5 after.

PS - Oh worth a cheeky mention. This weekend (Saturday September 4th) Soul Buggin' plays at the closing party (alongside a whole host of local djs) at Coconut Joe's Beach Bar on Market Square (10pm-11pm). We'll be sad to see Joe pack up it's coconuts as it's been a lovely replacement to the fried chicken eaating emos and goths that normally reside in the Nottingham's Market Square. Cheers for the Moijtos Joe!

Brewster's Millions!

Sweaty arsed disco antics down at the Buggin' last month then or what!? Woooooah. We knew Bill Brewster was a legend and would not disappoint but nothing could of prepared us for that beast of a session. Arguably our busiest little knees up in Moog we were truly knocked for six the amount of people that showed up and we gotta say what a fantastic crowd you lot were. Big ups to everyone of you that got on those floorboards for the stomp and of course a very special thank you to Bill Brewster who turned in a fantastic 2 hour set consisting of bomb after bomb. It was getting silly at one point and very hot in there but when he played the Harvey Black Cock edit of The Dells "No way back" that was it for me I needed a sit down. Too much heat!

So where the bejesus do we go from there then!? Well before we even get to our big birthday bash next month we've got the small matter of our annual August bank holiday all dayer to get over first which takes place back at Moog on Sunday 28th August. You know the deal by now - we kick off at 4pm and go right through till 3am and this month we've asked some of our favourite djs to come and join us. Headlining the party we have the Deep Space Orchestra who are a fine DJ/production duo from Manchester who we were lucky to play with earlier this year at the Disconnected warehouse party and they blew our socks off. They both have serious skills behind the decks and with a whole host of their own productions released on labels such as Winding Road, Art, Five20East and their own Use of Weapons imprint they certainly know their onions.

Joining the duo will be two local guest DJs Matt Rhythm from the Bleep District / Rhythm Plate duo and local party fiend Andre Bonsor, best known for not only his marathon levels of party endurance but his stellar work as one half of Schmoov! and Master Man.

Musical back up will be supplied by the Soul Buggin' residents Wrighty, some monkey with a bag full of beans and Derby warlord Mark A.

As we kick off so early you'll be able to get in free if you come down before 7pm (worth it to grab some of Moog's lovely munch) or after it'll be £3 entry before 10.30pm and £5 after.

Soul Buggin' goes to the beach...

Slashing down with rain while freezing your tits off - hurrah for the British summertime! You gotta love it. Well, not really but hold your horses all is not lost just yet. For those that can't afford to sod off abroad and are stuck here with us in blighty a slice of pure tropicana is coming right here to Nottingham this summer. A few years back the council realised that the majority of sausage roll munching folk in Nottingham were lazy gits who couldn't be bothered to go to the beach so in a stroke of genius they hatched a plan that was as bonkers as it was brilliant. Why go to the beach when the beach can be brought to you? Cue a shed load of sand, a real fun fair, ice cream shop and fully licensed beach bar dumped in our very own market square for the summer.

Coconut Joe's is the beach bar situated slap bang by the Council building and over the next few months they are hosting some great little nights. Below are a few dates when us Soul Buggers will be playing outside in the bar (including Saturday 30th July where we'll be using it as our pre-party with Mark Rayner from Wild Honey before our main session with Bill Brewster at Moog). Check out some of the other dates too where many of our friends will be playing.

We hope to see you down by the beach for some disco flavoured sandcastle nonsense over the next few weeks.

Summer heaters in yer speakers!

Phew. It's all got a bit hot and sticky ain't it!? While some chose to roll around in the dried mud at last weekends Glastonbury, here in Nottingham things got pretty dirty too as we invited Electric Chair legend Luke Unabomber to our monthly soiree for a bit of a disco. Turning in a firing 3.5 hour set the Unabomber smashed up Moog good and proper culminating in some fantastic end of night scenes ('Baker Street' caused some serious air saxaphone blowage on the dancefloor - shout to all the dads!) Hats off to all those that made it down and a special mention must go to Alex's mate Dean who after dancing for hours, drenched through with sweat and ravenous, attempted to buy a kebab afterwards in our local take away round the corner with half a fiver claiming it was legal tender and worth at least £2.50. Skills.

So a few things to look forward to over the next few weeks here at the Buggin' HQ that need a mention. First off Wrighty and myself are hitting the road this Friday (1st July) and heading over to The Bulls Head in Birmingham (Moseley) to lay down our usual disco-inspired nonsense. We'll be playing from 12.30am till 2am and if your at the massive Mostly Jazz Festival over the road pop in afterwards and get on the good foot.

For all those Nottingham way Soul Buggin' will be back on Saturday 30th July at Moog where we'll be welcoming Bill Brewster to the decks. It’s been said that what Bill Brewster doesn’t know about disc jockeying is probably not worth knowing and we’re not going to argue with that. Since starting his DJ career in the late 80’s cutting his teeth playing in New York he’s played all over the shop and currently is one of the heads behind the superb Low Life parties in London. Whether it be writing columns for almost every dance rag out there, penning bible-like books on the art of the DJ (‘Last Night A DJ Saved My Life’) or creating hugely popular websites such as DJ History.com if it’s eclecticism, surprises, amazing unique music or sheer long-haul dedication to the dancefloor, Bill’s your man. We're looking forward to this one mightly. Usual rules apply get down before 10.30pm and get cheap entry (£3) otherwise it'll be a fiver. Keep yer eyes on this blog over the next few weeks for news of a very special pre-party too.

Bank holiday summer madness

So you recovered from all that bank holiday silliness then? Here in Nottingham it all got a bit crazy but with the Buggin' Boogaloo party at The Canal House at the start of the month setting the tone it kind of was to be expected! Last weekend we waved goodbye to May with another storming session down at the Moog bar with guests Kev Beadle, Atjazz and Mouse. Due to the weather being a bit hit and miss we did the whole shebang inside and come early evening we got things rolling nicely with warm up sets from Mouse, Mark, myself and Wrighty (who had packed loads of Gil Scott Heron's music in tribute to his very sad passing on the previous Friday). There seemed to be so much going on that Sunday in Nottingham with various festivals and other all dayers throughout the day but we ended up having a top crowd bomb down. Thanks so much to all those that reached and of course to our guests. Special doff of the hat to the guitarist who plugged himself in and started jamming with Atjazz. Ace.

I'd never thought I'd say this but I'm kinda glad that there isn't a bank holiday for a bit as I don't think my liver could take another one. Unfortunately all plans for a quiet month will be put on the back burner as we welcome Manchester party legend Luke Unabomber to Soul Buggin' on Saturday 25th June at Moog. Luke is one half of that powerhouse DJ / production duo The Unabombers who are best known for creating one of the greatest disco dens in the UK in the form of The Electric Chair. With guest DJs including the likes of Carl Craig, Jazzanova, Francois K, Harvey, Derrick May, Osunlade, Laurent Garnier, Danny Krivit and Moodymann the club was one of the most respected in the country. When it closed it’s doors the ‘Chair’ philosophy was exported to Croatia and the annual Electric Elephant festival has become the ‘must do’ weekender of the summer with its infamous boat parties and stellar line ups. We can’t promise Luke will be sailing a boat through Moog but we can guarantee some pretty sweaty party vibes so we urge you to book your place on the hallowed floorboards early as this one could get pretty crazy.

Entry for this one will be the usual £3 before 10.30pm and £5 after and we'll be going on till 3am.

Buggin' in the sun

Jazz legend Roy Ayers once sung about hummin' in the sun but on the bank holiday just gone we decided to honour his sentiments but go one better and do some buggin' in the sun with fellow disco warriors Basement Boogaloo down at the Canal House here in Nottingham. On the back of a crazy weekend filled with royal wedding garden parties some of us were feeling pretty frazzled but as the sun shinned down bright by the canal and the tunes started pumping our disco spirits soon began to lift. With a great crowd getting their stomp on outside on the wood decking some pretty crazy scenes ensued. Over the course of the day all three of us Soul Buggin' residents played alongside local heads Alex Traska, Fran Green and ex-nottingham boogaloo bandit Olly Hewitt to a great floor that danced away to the likes of the Black Science Orchestra, Candi Staton, Stevie Wonder, Fela Kuti, Ashford and Simpson, Mr Scruff, Talk Talk, Terrence Parker, Talking Heads, Deetron and a lot lot more. Maybe it's because here in England our weather is so rubbishly unpredictable that people give it that little bit extra when it comes to getting involved in some alfresco disco action or maybe just the fact that everyone has been on the pop for 10 hours and off their tits but eitherway there was some bloody silly dancefloor scenes out there!

After the madness of the of the early evening / sunset session we all bombed upstairs to The Loft space above the Canal House where Boogaloo's Ed Cotton and special guest Mark E let rip to round off the night. Many thanks to those that came down and for those that missed it, well, you'll need a sick note from your mum or your going straight in detention for being such a loser.

So with two bank holidays in quick succession the last thing your poor wrecked body needs to read about is another big bank holiday party but don't worry, this one is a few weeks off yet but read this you must as it's pretty damn special. Last year we had both Kev Beadle from the legendary Southport Weekender and deep Derby super producer Atjazz come and play at Soul Buggin' on separate occasions and almost immediately after each party we said to ourselves they simply must return after playing firing sets way back when we used to do our old friday night sessions. Well, come Bank Holiday Sunday 29th May they are both coming back to play on the same bill as we're putting on a huge 11 hour party at the Moog bar. We'll be starting from 4pm in the afternoon with a BBQ (weather permitting) up on the roof top complete with dj sets from the Soul Buggin' residents and local dj/promoter Mouse from the ever excellent Cult club night who promises us one of his special eclectic beats-style sets. Then as the sun sets we'll all be pilling downstairs to kick off our evening session where we'll be welcoming Kev Beadle and Atjazz to the decks. Entry for this one is free before 9pm, £3 before 10.30pm and only £5 afterwards so for 11 hours of bank holiday raving it's a bargain.

Attack of the Phlash

Since the last post on here in February things have all gone a bit crazy in the world and we were truly shocked to see the horrific footage of the recent tsunami that swept over the eastern coastline of Japan few weeks ago. A scary reminder that mother nature still has us held firmly by the goolies and despite Japan being one of the most technologically prepared countries in the world it suffered terrible destruction to it's coastal towns and villages with the death toll in the thousands. While we may be helpless to stop such natural disasters from occurring one thing we can do is to do is to our bit towards helping the Japanese people recover from this devastating disaster over the coming months and years.

Here at Soul Buggin' HQ we decided to turn our March party into a bit of a fund raiser and despite being only a small night (we're the first to admit we might not be able to raise Comic Relief style millions!) we still wanted to do our bit so chose to donate all our profits made on the night to the British Red Cross relief fund. As well as our guest Phil Asher who came up from London we added Matt Rhythm from super group Rhythm Plate to the line up. With a great crowd come down both djs played superb sets and with you lot getting right on it we suddenly had a fantastic party on our hands. I guess it must get quite boring to read me constantly banging on about 'the vibe' but after all these years I still buzz my tits off when a small room of about 100 enthusiastic like-minded people create a magical atmosphere on a dancefloor. It is sometimes overlooked just how special this particular quality is in a party and all the promoting, flyering, spamming or shouting cannot guarantee those moments but when they do happen they are indeed special. Not all nights can pull this off and we love the fact that you lot make the effort to leave the mentalism of town on a Saturday night and come and get on the good foot at Soul Buggin' in a small pub in rough old Radford. Anyway, I'll stop rambling like I'm rushing in Ibiza circa 1988, just check out some of the great pictures that Nick Clague shot on the night. A massive thank you to Phil and Matt for coming down to play - you both rocked it - and all the cheering at the end had us beaming from ear to ear. Japan - we partied hard for you!

For our next party we've got something pretty special lined up with a change of venue for a one-off all dayer as we team up with fellow disco cohorts Basement Boogaloo at The Canal House on Bank Holiday Sunday 1st May. We love our bank holiday all dayers like Willy Wonka likes chocolate and we had toyed with the idea of doing a bigger event down there last year but now with the Boogaloo crew by our sides we can't wait for this one. As well as both sets of residents from the two nights we've also asked local web radio extodinare Alex Traska who runs the popular myhouseyourhouse station as well as Fran Green from the glorious Wild Honey Soundsystem. Heading up this gang of reprobates will be be Merc Recordings main man Mark E. Limited early bird online tickets are now available for this outdoor session from http://www.residentadvisor.net and are priced at £6 (and then £8 for standard tickets) so make sure you pick one up as they've already started selling fast (otherwise it'll be a tenner on the door). Getting a ticket also guarantees you entry to the limited capacity after party upstairs in the loft that rocks on till 4am. Things all kick off at 3pm in the afternoon outside on the decking so get down early as we'll be doing a BBQ too.

If you build a disco they will come

Ah springtime. Can you feel it? Maybe I'm being a bit premature but I can feel it tickling me in the rude bits what with these lighter nights slowly starting to tease us. We've got lots lined up over the next few months here at Soul Buggin' but before we get into any of that let's break down the beast that was last Saturday night. Now we've had many djs come and play for us over the years and all of them I've admired for various reasons, whether it be their stella productions that I've bought, legendary dj sets or brilliant club nights they've run around the country but the guest dj at our last party just gone was for me pretty much up there as someone who I have the upmost respect for. Ashley Beedle has been an artist I've been following for a good 16 years or so now, collecting twelve after twelve of his fantastic remixes and collaboration projects and he has been a huge influence on my record collection ever since I first heard his Radio One Essential mix in the nineties. To have him come and play at Soul Buggin' was a huge honour and one that I still had to pinch myself was actually happening as the night began.

As soon as we opened the doors we had a great crowd begin to filter in from the get go and come midnight when Ashley took to the decks I think we must of been pretty much at capacity with the joint heaving. Ashley played a great set of new bits, special unreleased exclusives and a few classics (when he dropped one of my favourite Black Science Orchestra records in the form of 'New Jersey Deep' I nearly lost the plot) and over the next few hours he had the place literally jumping. A big thank you to all that made it down, boogied, drank, wobbled and got on the good foot with a special big up to the guy who was loving it so much he started CRYING while dancing. So were do we go from there then? Well the guest we've got lined up to come and play at our next party on Saturday 26 March at Moog here in Nottingham has in many ways a shared history with Ashley. As well as being long time friends they have also collaborated on various projects over the years and when it comes to listing some of the unsung heroes of the UK dance scene few can deny that Phil Asher doesn't deserve his place in the history books. With over 200 production credits to his name the Phlasher’s records have been smashing up dancefloors for the best part of two decades now. As one of the founding members of killer outfit Restless Soul he’s forged an impressive back catalogue that has also included various collaboration projects such as Phlash and Friends which drew together a collection of artists such as Mark de Clive Lowe, Dego from 4 Hero, Karizma, Orin Walters, Zed Bias and Benji B. Having djed in every corner of the globe since the early nineties he has also been instrumental in setting up firing club nights Co-Op and Inspiration Information right here in the UK.

He doesn’t really come up here much so this will be one certainly not to miss. Oh, and it’s one of the Soul Buggin’ resident’s birthday so expect some serious party flavours to go down! We kick off at 9pm and go on till 3am and if you get down before 10.30pm you can get in for a mere £3. After it'll be a fiver.

Well that's Janaury smashed...

Hurrah! January, universally known the world over as the 'bastard month of the year' due to the fact that, well basically it's a right horrible bastard, is over at last. Here at Soul Buggin' we almost contemplated taking a short break for the month and focus our attention on February but we came up with a better idea. Why not side-step the usual Buggin' format in January and do another Fun Your Ear Midlands party instead and bloody hell I'm glad we did. 13 djs all came down from as far a field as Hastings and Manchester to lay down an eclectic musical soundtrack which created an evening of music you'd be hard pushed to hear elsewhere. The format was simple - each dj gets 30 minutes to do what the hell they like and all in all it turned out to be a blinder. Despite the ropey sound issues at the start we ended up having a right old knees up and reminded me why FYE is still pretty damn special. There were so many great selections from the djs that it was pretty impossible to pick out a favourite but I really did genuinely enjoy all of them. From Orsi's heavy seven selections to Elmo's latin bangers (Orchestra de la cruz - massive! And then playing Carl Cox! Wtf?! Only at FYE people!), Cyclonix's bruk up (the Simbad remix of Afronaught was a new one to me!), Tony chucking Moonstarr on slayed me at the end, Fire and Skill's balearic madness, Rare Colours firing drum and bass selections (that track on Holistic was huge), the mighty Ade P pulling them out big time, Pickering getting his 80's groove on, the Jazzchoppers upfront Deep Space Orchestra CDR material (the new shizzle sounded great), Jimi Oh bringing heat to the table.... arrrrgh it's starting to blur into one now as I try to recall the music but you get the idea. Big thanks to all those that made the journey up (or down) and hats off to all the djs - you rocked it. With 3 parties under the belt now for the midlands, this has got to be a yearly date on the calendar.

So if that's how we start the year how the hell are we going to end it? I'm not quite sure but one thing I do know for a fact is that we are proper pumped up like Macho Man Randy Savage in a blow up sumo suit for our next Soul Buggin' party on Saturday 26th February at Moog. Regular attendees of our parties should see a pattern emerging here regarding the guests we invite down and it is no overstatement to say that Ashley Beedle is pretty much up there as one of our favourite producers and djs. So where the hell do you start with this man?! There aren’t many people knocking about who can claim to have had as much influence on the UK’s dance music scene as Ashley Beedle and most people into good music will have at least one record or compilation of his in their collection.

To try to list his back catalogue of musical productions is nigh on impossible but his work as X-Press 2, Black Science Orchestra, The Ballistic Brothers, Black Jazz Chronicles, Mavis, Darkstarr, Africanz on Marz, Disco Evangelists or the London Heavy Disco Revue (to name but a few!) is pretty jaw dropping. He's worked with, produced or remixed a wide range of artists as diverse as Elton John, Bob Marley, David Byrne, The Streets, Bent, Horace Andy, Lily Allen, The Police, Nuyorican Soul, Candi Staton, First Choice, Lambchop's Kurt Wagner - oh this is just silly, we haven't got enough space to make a proper list but you get the idea.

Having djed all over the world he continues to be a major influence and inspiration in DJs record boxes or on dancefloors and discotheques across the globe and we're dead excited here's coming down to Soul Buggin'. As usual doors open at 9pm and go on till 3am and if you get down early you'll get cheaper entry (£3 before 10.30pm / £5 after).

Hello 2011!

So that's the first decade of the 21st century polished off, what's the next got in store for us I wonder? I dare not make any predictions if I'm honest at this point in time as my brain is still frazzled from all the festivities just past. I did hit it a bit too hard over the Christmas season so I'll need to concentrate a bit to write this, please bear with me

Here in Nottingham we decided to wave goodbye to the monster that was 2010 last month with our annual christmas Soul Buggin' party in Moog and invited along the Feel Good Phonic boys to join us for a mince pie disco knees up. With both sets of residents set to square up on the turntables (a total of SEVEN djs - 4 of them and 3 of us) we were slightly outnumbered which wasn't too bad as the combined age of us Soul Buggers is about 274. However disaster soon struck - Mark AND Wrighty were unable to make it down so it was down to me to try to fight em off with whatever bombs I could muster. Luckly I think I just pulled it off but I'd never heard the FGP boys together before and they certainly didn't disappoint, mixing up a right solid selection of dance floor nuggets with even the odd christmas anthem thrown in for good measure ("Santa Claus is coming to town" - Dave u bleddy nutter!!) Special thanks to Luke, Anthony, Mr Cross and Chopper for making it over as well as those that came down for a boogie. Was a lot of fun.

So with Christmas finally put back in it's box for another year, our bellies considerably more rotund and heads still pretty mashed up from the festive mentalism all eyes now focus on 2011. After a pretty belting year down at Soul Buggin' we're lining up loads for our monthly little sessions this year but to kick start it all off we've decided to blow off the doom and gloom that envelops us all at this time of year and do something a bit different. On Saturday 29th January down at the Moog bar we're going to be hosting a Fun Your Ear Midlands THREE party.

In 2009 we hosted 2 FYE parties in the region after previous sessions had taken place in the capitol, the North and South coast. Our 2 parties proved such a success we're doing it again down at the Moog bar. For those unfamiliar with these parties the concept has remained unchanged in 10 years. A group of djs (12 in this case) get to play for 30 minutes of whatever they want and however they want and in turn keep the night constantly fresh, eclectic and interesting. The results are always unpredictable and this is the very true essence of an FYE night. What on paper sounds like an absolute disaster waiting to happen turns out to be pretty special due to the fact the selectors tend to have bloody good record collections! Kicking off at 9pm and going on till 3am this ones a freemans so you can't ask fairer than that if your feeling the pinch .

We look forward to seeing you on Saturday 29th January to dance off all that Xmas grub.

2010 - A Soul Buggin' review

So is it really that time already?! I dunno about you lot but 2010 has flown by in a flash for me and I can't quite believe we've reached the end of the year in one piece but just one look outside at 'snow-carnage Britain' and its well and truly confirmed - we're most definitely knee deep in December. It is at this time of the year where I like to take a moment to look back at the previous 12 months and take a moment to collect my thoughts on all the parties, music, adventures, good times and reflect on just what the devil happened in 2010.

Our humble little Soul Buggin' night has, on reflection, had a pretty belting year all in all clocking in a total of 12 parties (with one more to go before the years out) that has seen some firing dj sets, amazing dancefloor scenes and plenty of all round tom foolery down at the Moog bar. We kicked it all off back in deepest darkest January with three friday night parties in succession with Paul "Mudd" Murphy and Mark Rayner, the Northern Comfort guys from Manchester in February and Derby heads Atjazz & Clyde in March (streamed live over the net via webcam too).

Before we knew it we had wrestled our way out of the winter and spring was upon us so we decided to throw an all dayer on Easter Sunday and invited over Basement Boogaloo's Nick Shaw as well as John Buckby and Ed Challands for a big dust up. Unfortunately 'the sarg' Shaw couldn't make it (personally I still think he bottled it) but alas the night was a monster with a dancefloor going for it at 9pm which is pretty unheard of in Moog and didn't stop until I attempted to clear the floor with the Fania Allstars.

We thought one party in April wasn't enough so come the end of the month we asked local lad Ex-Friendly to pop on down with back up from Nottingham lad Ben Aylward who was over from Australia for a few weeks where he now resides.

As May opened up us Soul Buggers were asked to DJ at the Nottingham Bar and Club Awards in the Pitcher and Piano alongside local web radio extraordinaire Alex Traska and special guests The Cuban Brothers. It was mighty strange DJing in a massive church but we made an occasion of it and donned our best threads and gave it to em inbetween the eyes, well kind of. Anyway, for some reason that still dumbfounds us we ended up coming third in the 'Best Independent Club Night' category which considering we're a small night that plays old fogey disco music to a predominately older crowd wasn't half bad when you look at some of the nights we were up against. Thank you all for those that voted!

With an extra spring in our step all eyes were now on our next bank holiday party at the end of May with Colin Curtis (his 2nd appearance for Soul Buggin'), Joe Buhdha and Daddio. We thought we might have a busy one on our hands after the previous Septembers scenes when Colin last came to town and we weren't wrong either. A fantastic all dayer with a superb crowd in attendance.

Come June we'd reached the half way mark of the year and had been thinking of moving our night to Saturdays as many folk were complaining they couldn't always come down due to work commitments etc so we thought why not as it made sense after all. Before all that though we wanted to go out with a bang on a Friday so we asked over Kev Beadle to come down to Moog and send us off in style and boy what a night. Seeing Mikey slapping the ceiling to Kyle Hall on the dancefloor at the end will be an image that will stay with me for a long time!

So after the decision to move the night to a Saturday had now been taken we thought sod it lets go full on disco for this one and who better to ask to provide the soundtrack than the Million Dollar Disco don himself Mr Al Kent. After a very long journey down from Scotland Al turned in a firing set and reminded us all why we really need to get up there to one of his own nights in the new year. Absolute fire.

With England's world cup campaign well and truly sodded up and now left in the shadows we turned our attention to the August bank holiday which was normally the time of year where Basement Boogaloo throw a massive party but as they'd all buggered off down south we thought we'd be cheeky and go for broke - could we turn in a THIRD storming bank holiday all dayer? We bloody well could and plans were put in motion for a rooftop BBQ with DiY nutters Osbourne & Woosh, Paperecordings head honcho Flash Atkins and balearic nutters Steve KIW and Dave Pickering. Right on cue the weather decided to balls it right up for us with crazy gale-style winds so we moved it all inside but that didn't seem to stop folks getting on the good foot. It got pretty messy but hey this was the last bank holiday of the year!

For September we thought as it's our birthday let's put on something special and we were dead chuffed when Simbad and Charles Webster both came down to rock the Moog turning in a fine back-to-back 3.5 hour set. It was proper ace and one of my favourite sessions of the year! I'd love to do some more back-to-back style sets in 2011!

The nights had now begun to get very dark and with halloween soon on our doorstep we threw caution to the wind and threw a fancy dress disco and invited Faze Action's Simon Lee over for the craic. With some very odd nutters descend on the joint (with my fave being that freak Ady in a dress) the night proved a bit of a belter.

November had been a pretty big month last year if you remember as we had previously had Benji B over from BBC Radio One so we thought we'd keep it large and welcome down Filthy Luka from the Horse Meat Disco collective. With a crazy turn out which in turn created some fantastic dancefloor scenes this one had to be one of the best sessions of the year for us and believe me, we've had some bloody good ones.

So 12 parties under out belt and 2010 is about to wave goodbye but hold on to your hats we ain't done yet. Saturday 18th December is our final shindig where we will no doubt be swishing about full of mulled wine and cider to celebrate not only Christmas but the past 12 months I guess. We'll be keeping it on a residents tip for this one but have also invited the guys from Feel Good Phonic to come down and throw some disco mince pies about. With a cheaper door entry of £2 it all kicks off at 9pm and goes on till god knows when this one should be a right laugh so come on down and raise a glass of Christmas cheer with us.

I'd just like to say, on behalf of all three of us I guess, many thanks to all our guest DJs, dancers, drinkers and droogs that came down to the Buggin' in 2010 and shook it all about. We've had a fantastic year and have some great plans for 2011 and we'd love you all to join us again.

You know thinking about it, as long as I've been on this earth I don't think I've ever 'celebrated' halloween. I dunno why but just like the fireworks of November 5th (which incidentally happens to fall on my birthday) it's never really grabbed me, even as a young nipper. Maybe it was the fact that my mum scared the bejesus out of me with tales of getting kidnapped by dirty old men if I went out trick or treating as a kid or maybe it was my dislike of knocking on strangers doors begging for money (I much preferred the classic game of 'knock, door, run' as a youngster to be honest). Either way it never featured heavily on my radar despite the zillions of parties that go off.

Anyway, this year was the first time I got into the spirit as we decided to have a fancy dress halloween-themed disco down at our monthly Soul Buggin' session and welcomed over Simon 'Faze Action' Lee to the infamous Moog turntables. Last time he played in Nottingham was Basement Boogaloo a couple of years ago so it was great to welcome him back to the city. As per usual things started off slow as Wrighty and myself warmed up with the sounds of Theo Parrish, Willie Hutch, Black Science Orchestra, Frank De Jo Jo and that killer new Jamie Woon track "Night air" plus many more until various fancy dressed freaks and fruitcakes descended upon Moog. Simon Lee took to the decks and ended up turning in a heavy 3 hour set with fresh Faze Action pieces, special edits and disco bombs a plenty. Top stuff. Oh, and we still need to know what the killer italo thing was but he's keeping it a secret! Aarrrgh!

A big thank you to Si for coming over and a big up to all those that came down, especially those in fancy dress garb with a particular high five to the freakiest mother fucker of the night - Mr Ady Tasker who decided to come as, well I'm not quite sure but it was bloody scary.

So this month we've decided to keep it on the disco tip and invited Filthy Luka (aka Luke Howard) from the Horse Meat Disco collective to join us at our next Soul Buggin' party on Saturday 27th November. Since its humble beginnings London's Horse Meat Disco has become an institution on both sides of the sexual divide due in large part to its dedication and appreciation to disco music in all its forms. The weekly club night at The Eagle has become one of the must go to parties for disco heads from all walks of life and after a string of blistering international appearances around the globe as well as at our own homegrown festivals Glastonbury and Lovebox, the collective have proudly flown the flag for quality disco music higher than most.

We expect this one to be pretty mental as last time Horse Meat came to town a few years back there were proper roadblock scenes in Nottingham so we'd advise getting down early as it'll be first come first served on the door. Usual entry of £3 before 10.30pm and £5 after and it all kicks off at 9pm and goes on till 3am.

Birthday hangoverrrrr

The aftermath of a big birthday party normally means some major hangover action for me that lasts well into the start of a new week, almost guaranteeing I'll be trying to scurry into some dark hole but surprisingly as I write this on a cold and gloomy monday morning I feel pretty good which must surely be a world first. If I'm honest I'm still buzzing from the Saturday just gone and refuse to let the extended hangover take it's deathly grip.

Here in Nottingham on Saturday 25th September our Soul Buggin' collective threw a big party to celebrate our 6th year in the game. It doesn't really feel like 6 years due to the sporadic nature of our early years of putting on nights but anyway all that was explained on here in last months ramblings. We were dead chuffed that our guests Simbad and Charles Webster came down to raise a glass with us and boy did we all celebrate. With a great crowd turning up in force come midnight Moog was rocking proper as Simbad and Charles played a blinding back to back set for the best part of three and a half hours. Dropping everything from deep house cuts, hip hop jams, latin shufflers, broken beat grooves, old school anthems, brass band covers (how good did that "Good life" version sound!?), lots of their own exclusives and even a splattering of drum and bass near the end we thought they well and truly smashed it. A massive thank you to them both for coming down to play but an even a bigger doff of the hat to all of you lot who came down and shook a leg. You created a fantastic little party that makes all the work behind the scenes worthwhile.

So here we are then. Slap bang knee deep in winter with it's dark nights and even darker mornings creeping in but we urge you not to get your grump on just yet because we've got a great session lined up for you on Saturday 30th October down at the Moog bar. As it falls on the weekend of halloween we've decided to throw a fancy dress-themed party for a bit of a laugh and we've invited down Simon Lee from Faze Action to come and get all scary with us. Now the state we've seen some of you lot get in at Moog before you probably won't need to dress up to scare the bejesus out normal god-fearing folk but for those that do decide to don your evil attire you'll get discounted entry plus you'll get a free drink on arrival as Dave is gonna boil up a nasty cauldron of his legendary potent punch to get you creepy.

I've been a fan of Faze Action since I stumbled upon the track 'In the trees' in the mid to late nineties that came out on that brilliant UK label Nuphonic and soon began collecting everything I could. It totally blew me away on first listen and their first album 'Plans and designs' that it featured on was a massive influence on me and still gets regular plays in my sets. Since that first album they've taken their show on the road with live performances at numerous festivals and events around the globe as well as some firing dj performances at the more discerning club nights out there. In the weeks leading up to the party I'll be playing some of my favourite Faze Action productions and remixes over on my weekly internet radioshow 'The Noodle Hotpot' (every sunday @ 2pm-4pm on www.myhouse-yourhouse.net) so be sure to tune in if you'd like to hear some of their back catalogue.

On the night itself the usual rules apply - 9pm till 3am with resident spooky Soul Buggers Wrighty, Mark and myself warming up proceedings (hopefully looking scarier than normal) and entry is £3 before 10.30pm and £5 after (but remember you'll get in for cheaper if you've pulled your finger out and got dressed up!)

Happy Birthday Bizness

So is that the end of the summer? Blimey that went quick didn't it? I guess I should of known better really than to tempt fate in my last blog entry singing the praises of the great british summertime, especially as we were planning an all day party up on the roof terrace at Moog. Before we knew it August bank holiday Sunday was soon upon us and as many decided to venture down to carnival in that big crazy old London town to indulge in a bit of 'how many humans can we get in one street' game (followed by the popular pastime of 'how long can I hold the contents of my bowel in before it starts coming out of my ears') back up here in Nottingham it was all go for our big Soul Buggin' BBQ. We knew it would be too good for the weather to behave itself and with the wind trying to do a silly impression of Hurricane Katrina we opted to do the whole shebang inside Moog. A slight shame but not the end of the world - this was going to be a 13 hour party after all - come 3am we probably wouldn't be able to remember the name of our mothers let alone worry about the bleedin' weather. We'd invited DiY nutters Osbourne and Woosh, Flash Atkins (from the mighty Paper Recordings stable) as well as balearic assassin of love Steve KIW to join us but also chucked on old Fun Your Ear favourite Dave Pickering who came down from Manchester and before the Eastenders omnibus had started we were off.

With enough kids in the afternoon at one point to nearly open a fully-licensed creche things started nice, serene and sensible before the sun called it a day, the BBQ got packed away and it was eyes down, no talking at the back, nothing in this game for two in a bed. No, we didn't just suddenly have a game of bullseye but more importantly get on the good foot and start raising the tempo as people started to pour in from their bank holiday pub crawls. Messiness ensued as usual and a huge thank you to all our guests but more importantly you lot who drank, danced, bantered and boogied. That's 3 massive bank holiday parties in a row! Superb!

I can't believe we're slap bang into September already. It only feels like a few months ago that we had the legend that is Colin Curtis come over to celebrate our birthday last year (and how big was that session!). I've been doing some calculations to try to fathom exactly how old Soul Buggin' is and if we want to be all proper about things it turns out that this month we're six years old. SIX?! How the hell does that work out? Well come with me on a magical little journey through the dirty kebab-strewn streets of Nottingham for the back story....

Back in 2004 I'd decided to call time on my monthly Noodles night down at Bar None as all manner of madness was going on (another story in itself!) but times were changing for me as I'd just come out of a crazy relationship, was feeling a bit lost, felt extremely thirsty for free beer but most of all really liked the idea of locking down a proper weekly residency to play out the thousands of records I had collected but never really played out. Luck would have it that a random encounter with a bar manager (who I'm reliably informed was probably on drugs at the time) offered me a weekly spot at Bar Humbug (just off Friar Lane, Market Square) and I gratefully accepted. Running every friday night for 5 hours each week we consistently pulled in some great crowds who didn't like the idea of fighting in Walkabout but rather sup away with the sounds of Roy Ayers, 4 Hero, Jazzanova, Jill Scott, MAW and Moodymann pumping into their lugholes. It soon became apparent that this session needed a name, a theme and some branding so I came up with the concept of Soul Buggin'. A name that everyone in the bar kinda liked and after all, it seemed to fit in well with the venue.

A year soon passed and I was on fire. More drunk than ever on free booze, wearing the best threads, perving on anything that couldn't run away but more importantly was buying enough music each week to sink the titanic - I simply couldn't wait to play all this heat out at the weekend. Then disaster struck - with no warning I was told the bar was being sold. Ok I thought, this might not be the end of the world, I might be able to stay as all bars need a DJ right? Yes, all bars do unless your a strip club. Bugger. With the surreal experience of playing one last night while the strip club was open (next level mentalism) I was soon out on the streets and Soul Buggin' was homeless.

All was not lost though as a few months later fellow soul heads Wrighty and Mark A (who I'd randomly met through, erm, Norman Jay's message board some months before) put together the idea of forming a collective all based around a website where we could host mixes and the like. It seemed like a good idea and before long we were off messing up the internet with our musical nonsense with aplomb. As the years passed we decided to put on some one off bank holiday events coupled with a few christmas parties down at The Snug Lounge (once even challenging local disco lords Basement Boogaloo to a dust up) and also started a monthly residency at The Loft. Soon bad luck was to strike Soul Buggin' down again with yet another closure (I was starting to feel jinxed by this point) but as one door closes, another opens as they say and so it did. Enter the Moog.

I guess the rest is history you could say. Over the past two years at moog we've invited a long list of DJs to play with us from local spinners Red Rack'em, Fran Green, Alex Traska, Daddio and stacks of others through to DJs from afar such as Benji B, Domu, Kev Beadle, Colin Curtis, Al Kent, Mudd, Atjazz & Clyde, Scrimshire and so many more. Now as we celebrate our 6th year we thought we should do something special and go big style.

So on Saturday 25th September down at Moog, Newdigate Street here in Nottingham we've invited Simbad (Marathon Men / Raw Fusion) and Charles Webster (Presence / Miso Records) to help pop some party poppers with us. Both DJs are well respected not only behind the decks but twiddling the knobs on the various fine productions they touch and you won't really need me filling you all in on their individual sparkling careers - you lot are a pretty clued up bunch!

Kicking off at 9pm and going through till 3am (and due to the limited capacity) we recommend you get down early for this one and reserve your place on the floorboards (plus it's cheaper entry - £3 before 10.30pm / £5 after). Moog is a very intimate place after all but we kinda like that and always proves to be a great party.

A few weeks ago our humble little Soul Buggin' soiree decided to have a bath, comb the old barnet, pull its socks up, put on some nice slacks and hop on over to our first Saturday night residency at the Moog bar. After a good 18 months or so of doing some smashing Friday nights we'd talked about moving for a while and July 31st saw our re-launch party as we welcomed the man behind the ace Million Dollar Disco nights Al Kent as our guest. Strangely, the people who complained that they couldn't come to Soul Buggin' on fridays due to work etc actually decided, rather perplexingly, not to show but that didn't matter a jot. With loads of new faces deciding to come down it turned out to be a great little party with Al firing on all cylinders laying down special edits and string-drenched percussive bombs a plenty. Many djs claim to play disco these days but very few actually REALLY play disco so it was a pleasure to hear a true ninja at work! Big ups to those that came down and got down on the floorboards and a special thank you to Mr Kent for making the long tortuous train journey down from Scotland to Nottingham. All those that missed it, well, we did warn you. We shouldn't really have to tell you that disco is about actually dancing and sweating, not posting youtube clips up on facebook!

So in this country we do have a tendency to moan about a lot of things and what with the usual world cup and wimbledon woes well and truly over (blimey how bad was that?!) one thing I think it's safe to say is that we can't really grumble too much about the old weather this year. Being as skint as Shadrach Dingle in Emmerdale's Woolpack boozer on a saturday night, this summer has meant I've missed out on the usual croatia shenanigans and UK festival adventures but the pain has been somewhat dulled by the blinding summer we've had so far. These past few months the suns decided to smile on us for a change and I'm loving every minute of it. So, to nervously tempt fate we're deciding to throw a big all day 13 hour bbq up on the roof terrace of Moog on Sunday 29th August. For the past 5 years it's been almost traditional to get proper wonkered at either the Backyard Boogaloo or Boatyard all day events (at The Nags Head or The Canal House respectively) but this year they've decided to take a year out so we thought we'd step into those very big boots after hosting two successful big bank holiday parties earlier this year in April and May. We've only got small feet but for this party we've pulled in some big guns....

Ben Davis aka Flash Atkins is the man behind huge labels like Shaboom, Blaktrax and more importantly the legendary deep house label paperecordings which pretty much changed the game completely in the mid-nineties. Having djed all over the bleedin' shop for the best part of two whole decades from The Ministy of Sound, Plastic People and The Sub Club and beyond you may remember him from last years Bobstock event but for those that missed him we've invited him back to Nottingham.

Joining him on the day will be local luminaries Osbourne and Woosh from the DiY party collective. Those in Nottingham shouldn't really need any introduction to these guys other than you can take it from us they bloody well know what they're doing when it comes to laying down serious tunes.

Backing up the rear (oo-er) will be wobbly residents Wrighty, Mark A and myself but we've also asked Brighton's most balearic export Steve Keep It Wheel to come up and make sure I don't play too many dodgy 80's re-edits.

We'll be kicking things off at 2pm upstairs and will be going through till 10pm when afterwards we'll all bomb downstairs till 3am to get our groove on good and proper. It's a freebie in the day with a small £3 charge for those that decide to come down afterwards. It's also worth a mention that kids are very welcome till sunset so no need to book in that expensive babysitter.

Oh and don't worry if the weather decides to get it's grump on, we'll just stick two fingers up to it and leg it inside with our sausage sarnies.

Saturdays were invented for disco after all...

Last weekend we were very honoured to have Kev Beadle come over and grace the decks at our little soiree here in Nottingham and christ on a custard cream it was a sweaty one. With temperatures soaring throughout the day we knew we were in for a hot one but by the time Kev started to hammer out killers tunes one after the other no one was quite prepared for the heat that ensued both on and off the decks. Already well known for his long running mighty dj sets at the legendary Southport Soul Weekender we were blessed with everything from Dimitri From Paris edits of Harold Melvin and The Bluenotes, classic detroit monsters from the likes of Underground Resistance and even that new killer version of "Still in love" by Navasha Dayo. A solid 2 hour set that flew by which is always the sign of a good selection. Many thanks to Kev for making the long trip up to Nottingham and all you lot that came down and danced your socks off. When Mikey starts slapping the ceiling you know your doing something right.

So with all that madness still buzzing round our heads like those bleedin' vuvuzelas in South Africa, here at Soul Buggin' HQ we're gearing up for re-launching our humble little party on Saturday 31st July at Moog. We've decided to switch days from Fridays to the last Saturday of the month as we felt as ace as the Friday sessions were, we wanna go all out with the glitterball and bring disco back to Nottingham on the big old Sataaadeee. Surely that's what the day was invented for in the first place right? I've got no idea who came up with the concept of the weekend - it may have been some sort of God or it may have been a flying teapot I don't really care - what has been rather concerning lately is the lack of good soulful dancefloor nights on a Saturday here in Nottingham. While some like it there are many that aren't necessarily into the crash, bang, wallop 'lets smash the flying electro fuck out of it cos the kids love it' attitude that sometimes seems oh so prevalent in Nottinghams late night venues. With a zillion bars bringing up the rear (and to be fair, we've got some great ones in this town that do supply some great music) we should really be re-focusing on the important stuff, namely dancing. More specifically dancing to something you bloody well like. It's better than any exercise you can ever partake in because you can do it sober or completely off your nut, you get to meet like-minded mentalists and if your lucky and do some fancy knee drops or half-steps you might even pull as apparently how you dance is how you have sex. Lordy. Either way, it's win win everytime (as long as you don't try a knee drop halfway through playing hide the sausage if you do pull).

So it is with great excitement that we welcome one of the true flag bearers of the glitterball Al Kent to our Soul Buggin' re-launch party at Moog. To give you a full bio on this man would be ridiculous as I'll be here till christmas but as resident of the storming Million Dollar Disco night that has put on parties in Manchester and Glasgow (which in turn has played host to fine selectors Rahaan, Faze Action and Dimitri From Paris) he’s been djing himself all over the country from the Southport Soul Weekender to The Sub Club and beyond for donkeys years. With huge productions under his belt such as the Million Dollar Orchestra album “Better Days” on BBE Records he’s also a dab hand at the disco re-edit having turned in many a dancefloor bomb as The Brown Brothers. So hot on the heels of his recently released “Disco Demands 5” compilation we welcome a true purveyor of the disco to our relaunch party.

Support comes from the usual hairy residents myself, Wrighty and Mark A with doors opening at 9pm. Get down early to get in cheap (£2 before 11pm - £4 after) and if the weathers nice shoot your chuff up onto the Moog roof terrace, it's bloomin' lovely up there.

Bank Holiday smash upppppp

So what exactly is it about bank holiday sundays in Nottingham? I still can't put my finger on it but they always seem to be pretty mental and down at Moog on the 30th May it proved to be no exception as we welcomed the legend that is Colin Curtis, old rock city head Joe Buhdha and local jazzman Daddio to join us for another one of our Soul Buggin' all day parties.

As always things started off serene, calm and collected as the roast dinner massive chilled to tunes supplied by myself and fellow residents Wrighty and Mark A before the sun decided to go to bed and the dancers decided to get on the good foot. With a great crowd consisting of a lot of new faces turn out in force, come 9pm those floorboards at Moog were getting a good old stomping as nuff classics mixed with old and new grooves were getting thrown around with sheer lunacy.

All in all it was a great night and by all accounts you lot looked like you enjoyed it. Many thanks to our guest djs on the day. Here's some pics of the night.

So, with our livers still crying out for a visit to rehab and our knees still slighty worn out we ain't done just yet as all eyes look to our next party on Friday 25th June as we welcome long running Southport Soul Weekender resident Kev Beadle. Where to start with Kev!? Well, as one of one of the longest-running resident djs and main musical consultants for the Beat Bar at the legendary Southport Soul Weekender Kev Beadle is no stranger to putting together eclectic soul sets and is one of the weekenders true unsung heros having worked with just about everyone under the sun. Alongside his numerous residencies and worldwide dj appearances he also holds down a cracking weekly radioshow on www.solarradio.com where he regulary pushes the musical boundaries showcasing innovative future sounds deeply rooted in soul and jazz. Whether it be some new broken detroit techno jam or a little known dusty boogie joint his selections always inspire but more importantly make you want to suddenly get on the good foot!

This is one DJ that we've been looking to book for a few years and are happy to finally get him up to Nottingham. This will be our last friday night before we move to Saturdays which we'll be giving you more information on soon.

Disco's revenge!

As some of you may already be aware, here in Nottingham each year the cities pubs, clubs, promoters, staff and general sauce monsters all come together to celebrate the cities nightlife in one almighty piss up. It's been going a few years now and last Monday the big event was held at the Pitcher and Piano bar in the centre of town. As mentioned in my last blog by some strange act of madness Soul Buggin' was entered into the "Best Independent Club Night" category. We were up against some pretty big players and didn't really expect to do that well but I was personally chuffed that on the night we managed to take 3rd prize which considering we're not really a student night (c'mon - the average age of our punters must be somewhere in the 30's!), play music that kids don't really 'get' and generally do it all for a bit of a laugh ain't that bad is it really. Disco may not be such a dirty word here after all!

Anyway, we were also honoured to be supplying the music for the night (and after party at Brass Monkey) alongside MHYH's Alex Traska and The Cuban Brothers. I'd never been to one of these events before so it was nice to dust off the old whistle and flute and raise a glass to Nottinghams nitelife which if truth be told has taken a bit of a battering of late with all these closures and takeovers. The night ended as usual in some god awful late night takeaway shop with me nearly knocking myself out running into a glass door but I'll save that story for when I next see you.

So, with a renewed confidence in our step all eyes turn to our summer bank holiday party @ Moog on Sunday 30th May. Our last all dayer was pretty special so we thought sod it lets do another and this time we've invited the legend that is Mr Colin Curtis. Those of you who reached our birthday party in September will remember the scenes this man brought to Moog so it is a pleasure to have him back. On the day he'll be doing two different sets - an early doors and peak time one - so it'll be well worth your while getting down early. If that wasn't enough incentive then we've also got old rock city head Joe Buhdha and jazz dance mover and shaker Daddio supplying the sounds. Backing up that little lot will of course be the usual rag tag bunch of hairy residents Wrighty, Mark A and myself. We roll from 4pm and it's a freebie before 9pm and only a mere 200 pence afterwards. Should be good un we reckon.

On that note I'm gonna do one but before I depart breaking news has just come into the Soul Buggin' HQ. No, it's not regarding some slimy posh tory boy but infact something much more entertaining all about a very important appointment. Soon Soul Buggin' will be moving to the last Saturday of the month (rather than friday) so now we really can go hell for leather and let rip. Saturdays were invented for disco anyway weren't they?

Well, have you recovered from the monstrous Soul Buggin' vs. Basement Boogaloo party yet? No we haven't properly either. A fantastic 11 hour party that started sensible and serene but then got all kinds of wobbly. Nick 'the sarge' Shaw sends his apologies for his no show as unfortunately his serious work commitments dictated he couldn't attend. A real shame but rest assured the disco sexual psychopath will return soon. Special thanks to our other guests on the day John "I am the law" Buckby and "Evil" Ed Challands who both played blinders.

So just around the corner here in Nottingham are the Bar and Club Awards at The Pitcher and Piano and would you adam and eve it our little Soul Buggin' soiree has been nominated in the "Best Independent Club Night" category. We think someones been on the wacky backy again but we ain't gonna argue as we think we're worth it. We may be small, a little wobbly on the feet and smell of booze occasionally but we have thrown some belting parties these last 12 months so if you've got a spare minute (and of course you like what we're doing) could you pop over to the site and drop us a vote in? Right - what's up next then? Well Friday April 30th see's us back at Moog as we welcome special guest Ex-Friendly to the turntables. He's been been dabbling in all manner of leftfield beats now for 15 years or so and has recently been knocking out some damn fine soul re-edits that have caught the ears of many worldwide. We’ve also invited Sydney-based Ben Aylward over to spin some sun-drenched flavours as he returns back to the Notts bronx after causing havoc down under for the past 2 years. Christ it's another Derby invasion!!!

Springtime is upon us! So let's not muck about in March....

If you cast your mind back to last August you'll remember we hosted a little Nottingham launch party for the new DUCK album which had just been released upon the unsuspecting world courtesy of some of Derby's finest producers through the M8MC Music label. We were fortunate to have some of the albums contributors come over and play at Moog but one artist who unfortunately couldn't make that night was Atjazz. I've long been an admirer of Martin Iveson and if truth be told I was a little gutted he couldn't make it.

But all was not lost. A plan was hatched. Fast forward to March 2010 and we've been lucky enough to twist the arm of Clyde (M8MC Music boss) to return to Moog on the promise he kidnaps Atjazz and brings him along for the ride! Friday 26th March is the date we've locked down where we'll be welcoming those deep electronic Derby souls to Soul Buggin' and we'd love if it you could join us for what will be a rare opportunity to see both Atjazz and Clyde on the same night here in Nottingham and all for nowt too.

As a bit of a warm up for the main event on my radioshow this coming Sunday (21st March 2pm-4pm on www.myhouse-yourhouse.net) I'll be pulling out some of my favourite productions and remixes from the pair that I've been lucky enough to collect over the years. Some classics mixed in with some lesser known tracks you may or may not not have heard of before. Spring-flavoured Soul

Dunno about you lot but how nice are these lighter nights? As we stick two fingers up to winter I can't wait for some long overdue sun round these parts. With our first party of the year now under our belts all eyes begin to focus on the impending spring.

Dotted up and down the country we've heard of many nights like ours - small intimate affairs for the more discerning soul heads that are disillusioned with the musical tripe most places churn out - and one such night that caught our attention was Northern Comfort up in that big rainy city Manchester. Why? Well over the past few years they've been booking some top draw guests in the form of Mr Scruff, Al Kent and Trevor Whateva but have also been asking DJs to come and play who we've also put on at our own little shindig such as Colin Curtis and Domu. With a guest list like that we thought we had to have a word and were delighted that residents Rob D and Andy Vee accepted our humble invite to come and play at Soul Buggin'. Everyone knows it's the residents of these great little nights that are the true heroes of the scene and we're looking forward to them showing us how it's done Manchester stylee.

Doors open at the usual time of 9pm and we'll be going through till 3am. This ones a freemasons so those feeling the pinch you ain't gotta worry about nowt. Oh and don't forget, bung 4 of you in a taxi from town and Moog will refund your fare (upto £4).

New year, new decade

Blimey where did it all go eh? So much seems to have happened over the last 10 years since I moved to Nottingham at the turn of the century that sometimes I have to pinch myself that it's been so long. Club nights seemed to have come and gone, new venues have opened while old ones have imploded, many record shops have shut up shop, DJs have started to play things called MP3's and kids are now into new genres called 'Donk' and 'Dubstep'. Makes you ponder on just what the next 10 are going to throw up don't it?

So where do we go from here I guess should be the next question as we enter the next decade. As musical trends, styles and fashions pop up and disappear almost as quickly as they start these days I guess you've got to just do your best to focus on the things you love within this crazy scene we label 'dance music'.

Here at Soul Buggin' it's business as usual this weekend as we open up the new year with our first party of 2010, inviting Paul "Mudd" Murphy and Mark Rayner to that beloved late night den of filth that is Moog. For those not aware, Mr Murphy is guy behind the rather splendid Claremont 56 label that for years has been putting out some fantastic left-of-centre-disco-not-disco balearic-style sounds. With each release normally super limited many have escaped my clutches which is mainly down to the fact that (a) I'm too bloody lazy to get my arse in gear to purchase them quick enough and (b) the disco beards are on them these days quicker than Janine Butcher on Archie Mitchell's last will and testament. Joining Paul will be Mark Rayner who gears up to release his new label Perfect 10 on the unsuspecting world. Well that was one hell of a year folks....

So as 2009 draws to a close I thought what better time to maybe take a look back at the past 12 months and try to fathom out just what the hell happened. It's been a pretty crazy year all round with it's fair share of ups and downs but overall it's been a good one. Here at the Soul Buggin' camp we've seen a new birth, redundancies a plenty, the planning of our new kebab shop and a whole plethora of ridiculously good parties down at the Moog bar.

It seems a long time ago now when Red Rack 'em and Matt Shelton opened up the year with our first party of 2009 in January but since then it's all been a bit of a blur to be honest. This was the first year where we decided it was about time to up our lazy ass game and start inviting special guests to our humble soul soiree. In February we put on the first Fun Your Ear Midlands party after the London branch seemed to be stumbling around in the wilderness. It was a gamble but we'd witnessed some firing parties the year before up in Leeds and thought to ourselves hell let's do this in the Midlands. It was a resounding success and saw people travel from a far to come and DJ. When the bouncer starts dancing and a woman begins to take off all her clothes you know it's been worth it. We continued the momentum and hosted one more before the year was out which resulted in equal messiness and hilarity and hopefully we can make it a yearly session at the very least.

As the year progressed we welcomed some superb local DJs in the form of Fran Green, Andre Bosnor and The Love Unlimited Soundsystem to the decks as well as hosting an all day easter party with the likes of Alex Traska, Osbourne, Daddio and Nick Shaw but come the summer we decided to get all big for our boots and look to booking some DJs from outside the city that we'd long admired. Where to start we thought? We're only a small night with a right old wonky tap in the gents but we threw caution to the wind and asked Domu to come and spin and were delighted when he agreed (even more so now learning it was to be one of his last gigs although we're confident we didn't destory his career, only brain cells through copious amounts of booze). Where to next? Well with the imminent release of the DUCK album project by some of the leading electronic producers in the area we thought we'd open the doors to a Derby invasion and have a Nottingham album launch party. We drank, they Djed and I fell over lots.

For September Mark mentioned the prospect of getting the legend that is Colin Curtis (and I don't use that word lightly) to play and come the autumn the wheels were in motion for the mother of all guests to headline our birthday party. We witnessed an incredible turn out that blew us all away and proved to us that there are people in this city that don't think 'soul' is a dirty word.

Come the winter our balls were as big as watermelons and we thought we could put on Larry Levan. With the small problem of him being deceased since 1992 not detering us we opted for a selector whom I'd been in awe of for many years - Benji B from BBC 1xtra. It felt like a gamble of Las Vegas-style proportions as this was Moog we were talking about here - a small out of town late night sauce den with a capacity of just over a hundred - but we threw caution to the wind and did it. And what a night it turned out to be indeed! One of the best DJ sets I've ever seen in Moog and a truly magical atmosphere with basslines so heavy by the end of the night the toilet door in the gents was off it's hinges (seriously!).

So as we round up what really has been a fantastic year for us we bow out of 2009 with a christmas party at Moog on Friday 18th December. Bringing in the yuletide soul flavour will be disco queen Lucy Locket from the super Manchester night 'The Magnificent Dance'. With a free buffet put on by those jolly types at Moog we'd love you to come and raise a glass of soul sherry with us before we all bugger off for christmas.

On behalf of Wrighty, Mark and myself I'd just like to say a HUGE thank you to not only all our guests but also to those that came and danced, drank, jived and joked around with us. You are the party and the reason why we do it.

Rough and tumble...

It's been a strange old week here in the Noodle HQ with feelings of great excitement and dispair in equal measure to go with this crazy weather with been having lately. Let's get the sad news out of the way first shall we? At the weekend, along with the rest of the world, I learned that one of my favourite producers was retiring from the scene. You won't really need many clues as to who as the news soon spread like wildfire across various messageboard forums, the bonkers world of twatter and that crazy networking site faceache within minutes but for the benefit for those that have just come out of a coma this week it was of course Domu. It's no secret I've been a long admirer of his productions and musical talents (I even did a 2 hour tribute mix to him earlier this year) and my collection would certainly be a lot less colourful without his records but to read his intentions of finally calling time on his career filled me with sadness. His letter of farewell posted up on his blog page made for emotional reading and I for one will definitely miss his work. Will it be the last we hear of him? Maybe but I hope not. As cheesy and clichéd as it sounds, I'm a strong believer that genuine creative people can never simply cease to be, despite the outside forces that we all sometimes struggle against. A break away sounds like exactly what Dom needs right now and I wish him the very best with his future endeavours.

Here in Nottingham we were very fortunate to have Domu come and play at our Soul Buggin' night in the summer and he blew it up proper – yet again cementing his place well and truly in my personal top 5 favourite DJ chart of selectors I love to hear. To be honest, looking back over the year it's been a pretty big one for us down at the Moog bar and we're certainly not done yet as Friday 27th November sees another of my 'Big 5' grace the decks. Benji B certainly doesn't need hyping to the readers of this blog (that would be like trying to explain to Greg Wallace what chocolate tastes like) as his musical CV speaks for itself. I've long been an avid listen of his radioshows and have witnessed 3 of his fantastic DJ club sets which have left me speechless everytime and it is a total honour that he is coming to our small but perfectly formed night here in Nottingham. Of course that doesn't mean I'm not nervous. Having a selector you admire so much play for you brings with it a whole pirate ship of butterflies but with some serious levels of excitement thrown into that crazy mix in my belly this is one night we think could be quite special. We're keeping the door price to a reasonable credit-crunching £4 (shout to the dole crew out there) and we hope you can join us for what will be a rare performance from Benji B in Nottingham.

Don't forget - chuck 4 of you in a cab and keep the reciept and that lovely caring mother we know as Moog will refund your journey from town (upto £4 - we don't want people traveling from Glasgow with a £400 cab fare).

Let's start at the top shall we...

Firstly let me say a huge thank you to all those that came along to our Fun Your Ear Midlands party last friday @ the Moog bar here in Nottingham. Despite it being a party set in Robin Hood's home town, many travelled from a lot further afield - residents of Manchester, London, Northampton, Leicester, Derby and even the Southcoast were all in the house. In total, 15 djs took to the decks over the course of 7 and a half hours dropping everything from old school boogie, detroit hip hop, soul classics, deep house and - oh bugger it - there's no way I can list ever genre that made a drunken appearance. I do remember witnessing a jazz dance off at one point to some hi-speed Japanese Soil and Pimp type flavours and I'm still getting flashbacks of the impromptu MC set from Nottingham's very own Soulful Deviant aka Naz. On the subject of my own microphone antics, I feel I must apologise. It appears to be getting worse each month but in my defence your honour I have to admit the reason for this is I've been getting a little excited about seeing our monthly Soul Buggin' night begin to mushroom. As the absence of any kind of regular 'dancefloor' soul night here in Nottingham (bar the odd one off party here and there) becomes evermore apparent it gives myself, Wrighty and Mark even more determination and drive for it to continue and we're currently putting together some great line up's for 2010. Watch this space.

Of course, when we say 'soul', we're not trying to pretend we're an old motown night or dusty northern 45 dance, the genre is bigger than that for us and I'm sure you'll understand where we're coming from. Don't get us wrong, we bloody love our old school flavours as much as Mr Kippling loves his cherry bakewells but if you think we're going to deny the chance of the latest Warp release, Brownswood 12" or Carl Craig re-rub to be dropped because "it's new" then I'm afraid we're going to have to send you to bed with no dinner. It's as much about future soul flavours as it is the past. God that sounds wanky but you get the jist.

So on the subject of all things 'future' all eyes turn to our next party on Friday 27th November as we welcome our very special guest Benji B from BBC 1Xtra to Moog. To say we're excited is an understatement not seen since Willy Wonka first got the keys from the estate agent to his chocolate factory and turned round and said "Cheers". On my next blog in a couple of weeks I'll be giving you more details about that gargantuan party but until then keep it fruity and try your best to adapt to life without Masterchef on the box (for a little while at least).

Soul Buggin' gets all wordy...

So here we are! Welcome to the first Soul Buggin' blog. It was only a matter of time really I guess wasn't it? We've got lots to say and often spend many an hour grumbling to ourselves about important topics such as the price of sausage rolls, what age you should really stop looking at first year students and why the hell someone has re-edited yet another bloody Jacko record. As fellow Soul Buggers Wrighty and Mark are busy old chaps these days I thought what better time to launch my literacy skills upon the unsuspecting world and start our first Soul Buggin' blog.

Of course, some could argue this is just another excuse to spam up the internet with shameless promotion for our monthly night down at the Moog bar here in Nottingham (which of course it is - please see below for details on our next night!) but thats not entirely true. We'll be using this page over the following months to write about all kinds of things that float our boats. Whether it be a detailed analysis of the forthcoming new Predator film, the state of affairs regarding Masterchef Greg Wallace's pulsating belly, great parties put on by our friends around the country or quite simply music that we feel needs shouting from the rooftops.

Please pop in from time to time to see what we're up to - they'll be something for everyone with new mixtapes galore, party information and general waffle to read while your counting down the minutes until the next episode of Emmerdale starts.

After the storming success of the first FYE Midlands party back in February we thought, hell lets do one more before the years out and here it is.

So what is FYE? It began in the early noughties in london as a party for collective music heads to come together, play music and generally get right on it. Constantly changing venue (apart from a year long residency in conjunction with Birmingham's "Leftfoot at The Medicine Bar) it was very rarely in the same place twice. What separated it from other nights was the fact that anyone could play. It didn't matter if you were a veteran DJ with years of experience under your belt or someone who simply had a few CDs at home who was really passionate. This was backed up by a music policy of quite simply 'no music policy'. People were allowed to play whatever they wanted and with each DJ set lasting no more that 30 minutes the music throughout the night was constantly changing, keeping the party fresh and exciting.

Presented by the Soul Buggin' trio this promises to be something quite special. See you all on the 30th!
